Starbucks’ Campaigns

Starbucks Japan is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary by having a unique frappucino in each of Japan’s 47 prefectures.

Local baristas designed the frappucino based on the famous food or culture in each area

Q: What kind of Frappucino did Tokyo choose?

Q: What flavour would you guess for Hokkaido or Nagano?

Q: Why do you think Tochigi has lightning in it’s poster?

Tokyo - Coffee Jelly, Caramel, Espresso Frappucino (In Japan Coffee Jelly first became popular in Tokyo cafes)
Hokkaido: Corn Creamy Frappucino (5% corn)
Nagano: Apple Butter Caramel Frappuccino
Tochigi: Flashing Chocolate Frappuccino (It has the most lightning strikes in Japan. Mango sauce is the yellow)

Please guess the flavour based on the pictures:

Osaka: Lot of Fruits Cream Frappuccino. (Mixed juice is originally from Osaka - created during the war to not waste any fruit)
Yamanashi: Grape and White Chocolate Cream Frappuccino (It grows the most grapes and makes lots of wine)
Gunma: Yogurt Mango Frappuccino (It makes lots of milk and chose mango for the color of れんげつつじ (蓮華躑躅), a local variety of azalea)
Chiba: Mitarashi Coffee and Cream Frappuccino (Mitarashi Dango Sauce is made of sugar, water and soy sauce)

Q: Do you think the campaign is a good idea?

#whitecupcontest

In 2014 Starbucks held a competition when they noticed many customers DOODLE on their white starbucks cups. The winner’s design would be printed on it’s limited edition plastic cups.

Q: Do you think this is a good idea?

One of these designs was the winner. Which do you think won?

Starbucks received almost 4,000 entries in just three weeks.

Tens of thousands of people shared their designs on social media

#redcupcontest

Every Christmas Starbucks releases it’s red holiday Christmas cup.

In 2014 and 2015 Starbucks had a holiday #redcupcontest on Instagram. The users had to share and tag photos of their red cups to win prizes

Q: Do you think this was a good campaign?

  • viral marketing campaign

  • cost

The campaign went viral! In 2015 a photo was shared every 14 seconds on Instagram in the first two days.

In 2015 there was a huge CONTROVERSY in the US over the design of their red Christmas cups. Why do you think conservative Christians were angry about the design?

They believe there is a “war on Christmas

Some popular tweets:

  • “Starbucks REMOVED CHRISTMAS from their cups because they hate Jesus”

  • “In fact, do you know that Starbucks isn't allowed to say merry Christmas to their customers?”

American conservative Christians have been angry at Starbucks in the past because they…

  • supported gay marriage

  • didn’t allow guns in their stores

Were these good policies for Starbucks to have?
