Melania Trump’s fashion choices

The media always comments on the First Lady’s fashion choices and Melania Trump’s fashion is quite different from previous first ladies. Q: How would you describe the difference?

When Trump won the election a few designers, such as Tom Ford, Christian Siriano and Marc Jacobs announced they wouldn’t dress her. Why do you think they refused?

Reasons:

  • Tom Ford - “[My clothes] are too expensive. The first lady should relate to anybody”

  • Marc Jacobs - “I’d rather put my energy into helping out those who will be hurt by Trump and his supporters.”

  • Christian Siriano -" “For someone like myself, a young gay fashion designer, I can’t support a campaign where I might not have the same rights. I just got married.”

  • Jan 2016 - Trump’s Inauguration - positive - like Jackie Kennedy, she wanted to create a dignified and classy image to show her dedication to her new role

  • Apr 2017 - Official portrait - positive for the simple, elegant suit. Negative for the diamond ring ($3 million)

  • May 2017 - G7 Conference in Italy - positive - Dolce and Gabbana are Italian designers, negative - the jacket costs $51,500

  • Aug 2017 - Visit to Texas after Hurricane Harvey - negative - her high heels shows she won’t spend time visiting the most damaged areas which were flooded

  • Sep 2017 - Gardening charity event for kids - positive for her practical fashion - negative because the shirt costs $1380

  • Jun 2018 - Visit to Mexican border wall - negative - Zara Jacket says: “I really don’t care. Do u?” - Melania said she was criticizing the negative media criticism of her. It seemed like she didn’t care about the children being separated from their parents on the border

  • Oct 2018 - Visit to Africa - negative - the Pith Helmet is a symbol of Colonial Rule

  • Jun 2019 - visit to England - unclear - historically royal British women wear hats to the right side to allow men to stand on their left. Melania’s hat blocks her view of Trump so the British media reaction was positive if she planned it

  • Feb 2020 - visit to India - positive - the sash and jewelry are made in India. She paid respect to the country she was visiting

  • Jul 2020 - Twitter Post recommending people wear masks - positive for most - negative for many Trump supporters

  • Aug 2020 - Republican National Convention - positive for many pro-military Republicans. Negative - some say she looks like a dictator (e.g. Kim Jong Il)
