In 2020 Manchester City FC were BANNED from the Champions League for breaking Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

Before FFP was introduced over half of the European clubs were in debt. Several top level clubs had gone bankrupt recently too. The rules were created to:

  1. prevent clubs going bankrupt

  2. prevent billionaires from buying clubs and using their money to make the team win

Chelsea - Russian Billionaire
Man City - Abu Dhabi Royal Family
PSG - Qatar Royal Family

Man City was banned because they lied about their sponsorship money from Etihad Airways (which is also owned by the Abu Dhabi Royral family). Most of the money was actually from their owner.

Q: How do football clubs make money?

  • TV rights

  • Sponsors - on the shirt, in the stadium, commercials
