A company publicly criticizes Japan’s vaccine rollout
This ad, by magazine publisher Takarajimasha, appeared in 3 national newspapers in May. What does it say?
How do you feel about this ad? Do you agree with the opinion?
Why did they choose this image?
(Young girls in World War 2 learning to fight with spears)Would you like your company to publicly criticize the government sometimes?
What are the risks of criticizing the government for the company?
The government is using unscientific tactics (with no hope of success). Like training young girls to use spears in WW2
Translation:
No vaccine, no medication. Are we supposed to fight with bamboo spears? If things continue as they are, politics are going to kill us
We have been tricked. What was the past year for?
Now is the time to raise our voices in anger
Izakaya chain sues Tokyo government over COVID rules
In March 2021 Global Dining (who own the Gompachi chain) sued the Tokyo government because of the 8pm curfew.
They said the subsidies provided weren’t enough for the business to survive.
Q: Do you think can they win the lawsuit?
Actually they sued the government for 104 yen!
Q: Why did they do this?
Possible reasons:
They wanted to avoid paying the 300,000 yen fines for staying open
They wanted to publicly criticize the governments inadequate subsidies
They wanted to increase brand awareness of their chain
In May Global-Dining announced they would not keep normal business hours instead of closing at 8pm.
Do you think this was better for their businesses?
In July they announced their half year sales had risen by 92.3% YOY.
