Euros

For the first time the European Championships has 24 teams, (in the past there were 16). Why did UEFA expand the tournament?

Do you think it’s a good idea?

How do you choose who reaches the round of 16?

The biggest Christiano Ronaldo news happened at a press conference. What did he do?

Why do you think he removed the bottles?

How did this impact Coca Cola?

Ronaldo is an extremely serious athlete. He rarely drinks alcohol and said he only eats cake on his birthday.

Q: How many meals does Ronaldo eat a day?

Q: How many naps does he take?

Many newspapers reported that Ronaldo’s actions made Coke’s share price drop by 1.6% ($4 billion)

Q: Do you think Ronaldo had this much power?

Actually, the stock drop had happened by 9:40am. Ronaldo moved the bottle at 9:43am on the day. Sometimes we can’t trust newspaper headlines…

Ronaldo appeared in a coke commercial back in 2006 but since then he has decided against promoting unhealthy products

In 2013 Pepsi in Sweden made a series of ads featuring Ronaldo. What are they about?

(note: Pepsi are a sponsor of Messi)

What do you think of the ads?

How did Ronaldo’s fans react?

115,000 of his fans promised to never drink Pepsi again so Pepsi had to publicly apologize

22000 Scotland fans (many without tickets) came to London before Scotland played England.
What did they do?

Q: How did people in London feel?

Q: What did the police do?

The police arrested some people:

  • 13 for public order offences

  • 6 for drunk and disorderly

  • 4 for assault on police

  • 3 for assault

  • 2 for having (class A) drugs

After the game SOME Scotland fans helped clean the streets. Has this changed your image of them?

The few people who cleaned up didn’t make a big impact:

What differences do you notice between these 2 stadiums?

Fans at Wembley stadium (England):

Fans at Puskas Arena (Hungary):

Wembley Stadium is at 25% capacity for group games then 50% for the knock out round. Masks aren’t needed for outdoor events. Is this a good idea? Can the Tokyo Olympics use the same model?

The Puskas Arena in Budapest is the only stadium at full capacity in the Euros. Why do you think they can do this?

Hungary:

  • They’ve bought all their vaccines from China and Russia

  • 66% of people have had at least 1 vaccine

  • If you show your immunity card, you can enter the venue. You need at least 1 vaccine or proof you tested positive for antibodies

  • The President, Victor Orban, is seen as Europe’s last dictator, has been accused of sportswashing. He built this new stadium and wants to show it off the world.

Wembley is set to host the finals and semi-finals. UEFA is threatening to move these to Hungary because UK law says that all visitors have to quarantine for 2 weeks if they enter the country.

Q: Should the UK make VIPs quarantine and risk losing the events, or allow them to watch the game without quarantining?

VIPs: senior FIFA and UEFA officials, politicians, sponsors, broadcasters
