wine
Do you like drinking wine?
What is your favourite alcoholic drink?
From the BBC (Nov 2023)
Global wine production falls to 62-year low in 2023
Spain: down 14%
Italy: down 12%
Chile: down 20%
Why do you think wine production is so low this year?
weather
costs
demand
Reasons:
There was some bad weather: heavy rainfall, frost, drought
Rising costs: labour, fertlizer (due to Ukraine war)
Falling demand - inflation, craft beer, young people drink less
Only France maintained the same level of production but they produced too much for the demand.
It’s hard for farmers to compete with wine from cheaper countries (Spain, Chile, Australia, Argentina) and they became angry.
What do you think they did?
They blocked highways connecting Spain to France.
They destroyed lots of Spanish wine too
So…
What is your advice for wine farmers?
Rosé is becoming more popular but red wine’s demand is falling dramatically
It’s hard for wine farmers to change their business model because grapes being planted now might only be sold as wine in 30 years…
