Why does Gen Z love subtitles?

Gen Z = people born between 1997-2012

Zoomers = casual name of Gen Z people

Recently many newspapers have written articles about Gen Z trends. Surveys show that most Zoomers prefer watching movies or TV with subtitles.

Let’s discuss some of the reasons:

Most Zoomers watch TV on their tablets. So do I. Do you watch a lot of movies or TV on ipads or your phone?

Audio is less clear because speakers are now behind the TV (to have a bigger screen).

TV maker are also making speakers smaller. Why?

  • People care about the video quality more so a wide screen is more important

  • People who care about movies will buy separate speakers

  • The company can make more money by selling speakers

Many zoomers live with roommates and don’t want to disturb them

Also…the sound range is too big! The sound can suddenly get very loud (because it’s made for cinemas)

More actors use difficult accents. In the past people spoke more clearly (but unnaturally)

Why is this trend happening?

Recently international dramas and movies are more popular. In the past many English speakers were lazy to read subtitles! Are you into and movies or dramas from overseas?

In the past subtitles were not an option, people MAY have chosen to use them if they had been available

Do you know any more Gen Z trends that move or TV shows should focus on?

Do you think it’s a good idea to…

  • put Tik Tok stars in movies

  • movies / tv shows based on games

  • shorter videos (like YouTube)
