What will Trump do when he becomes President?
On the first day someone becomes the US President they can change some laws from the first day.
Biden became President after Trump so what kind of laws did he change on the first day?
Some laws that Joe Biden signed on his first day include:
stopping construction on the wall between the US and Mexico
making all government employees and contractors wear masks on government sites
restarting cooperation with the W.H.O. (which Trump had stopped listening to)
W.H.O. = World Health Organizationprotecting LGBT employees from workplace discrimination
discrimination = unfair to one type of people = 差別ending the ban on people from Muslim countries entering the US
reversing Trump policies that damaged the environment
making all government executives sign an ethics pledge so they won’t use their position for personal gains
ethics = our code of behaviour that makes us good people = 倫理
pledge = promise
personal gains = personal benefit (making money for companies they own)
Trump Promises:
Usually Civil Servants (= government employees) have jobs for life. They should be politically neutral. Trump promised to replace 50,000 of them with people he has chosen.
Why does he want to do this?
When Trump tried to change many laws in the past many civil servants tried to block him (because they were illegal or discriminated against racial minorities, working class people or LGBT members.)
Trump promised to make Elon Musk the head of a new Department of Government Efficiency. Musk promised to cut the government budget by $2 trillion dollars.
2 trillion dollars = $2,000,000,000,000
= 312,910,010,000,000 yen
How will this affect Americans?
Healthcare, environment and education services will probably get worse.
He promised to make mass detention camps and deport thousands of illegal immigrants a week. He’ll hire thousands of new border guards to help do this and protect the borders
His government was severely criticized for separating children from their families in the past. He refuses to answer if he will continue the same policy.
He’ll restart the ban on people from several Muslim countries (Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen) and North Korea and Venezuela.
Why is he banning people from these countries?
Venezuela has a terrible economy so many people are trying to illegally move to the US
Trump claims many terrorists come from the Muslim countries (even if they also have passports from other countries)
Trump worries about spies from North Korea
Pardon anyone involved in the January 6th attack on the Capitol Building
pardon (verb) = say they are forgiven for a crime (it helps them get jobs in the future)
He promised to impose…
between a 10 and 20% tariff on all $3 trillion worth of U.S. goods imports
… and a 60% tariff on all Chinese goods.
Why does he want to do this?
What impact will this have?
Trump wants to protect US businesses and hopes more companies and factories will be able to compete against cheaper foreign rivals
At first the price of all goods will rise dramatically which would harm working class people the most
Japanese exporters will be severely impacted
Other countries, like the EU and China will probably respond with similar level tariffs
Trump wants the Ukraine war to end. He said President Zelensky started the war and he promised to stop investing in Ukraine if they win it.
Why does he believe this?
When Trump’s businesses were close to bankruptcy in the past, only Russian banks would lend him money.
He also admires Putin because he is a “strong leader” and Trump wants to control the U.S. in the same way
What kind of energy policies will Trump have?
clean energy = solar, wind
traditional energy sources = coal, gas, oil
He plans to reduce Bidens subsidies on clean energy companies and lower taxes on oil, gas and coal power
he pledged to “Sack Special Counsel Jack Smith”
Trump has vowed to sack "within two seconds" of taking office the veteran prosecutor leading two criminal investigations against him.
Special Counsel Jack Smith has indicted Trump over alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and over his alleged mishandling of classified documents.
