Why do you think Nissan is in trouble?
They focused on low cost EV’s. Was that a good idea?
They slashed prices to attract customers. Was this a good idea?
Reasons:
They focused on low cost EV’s (Leaf and Sakura) but BYD is dominating in many countries
Their hybrids are cheaper but less fuel efficient than Honda or Toyota and they haven’t updated or improved their hybrid options recently
Some customers say they lack new exciting models
They slashed their prices which meant their profits fell dramatically
In 2019 there were reports that the Japanese government pressured Honda and Nissan to merge.
When news recently broke that the two might merge, Honda’s stock price fell 3%. Nissan’s rose by 23.7%.
Do you think Honda and Nissan should merge? What would the benefit be for Honda?
There are also reports that Mitsubishi will join the group. When this news broke their stock price rose by 19%.
