Love is Blind: Japan

This is a Reality Show on Netflix.

What is the unique concept?

The men and women can’t see each other

12 men and 12 women live in 2 houses that are next to each other.

You can go on dates in “pods” and choose who to have dates with.

  • Only when someone proposes, can they meet face to face

  • Then they go on a trip together

  • Their families meet

  • Then they decide if they want to get married

Would you watch this? Why?

Do you think it can create successful couples?

What questions would you ask someone in the pod?

Do you think this show is popular?

Why did Netflix decide to make this?

  • cost

  • Bachelor Japan

  • Terrace House

Terrace House has been a big hit overseas. Why?

The show is originally American and now there are versions in Japan and Brazil.

If we compare the American and Japanese contestants, what personality differences do you think we can see?

Do Americans or Japanese often ask:

  • “What are you wearing? Are you into crop tops?”

  • “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”

Everyone is given a notebook to take notes during their dates.

Which group takes more notes during dates?

Would YOU take notes?

Which group will dress up for their date more?

dress up = wear nice/stylish clothes

Which group has more fights while traveling together?

Which show version focuses on the discussions? Which version focuses on the face to face meeting?

Which version do you think had more proposals? Why?

In Japan the producers expected 4 proposals.
Do you think the real number was higher or lower?

  • In Japan there were 8 proposals.

  • Generally the American version is quite chaotic. People don’t make good decisions when they date in the pods.

  • Almost all the Japanese will take notes during dates and ask deeper questions. Most contestants in the US laughed at the guy who took lots of notes

  • The Japanese always dressed up for their dates even though they never saw each other. The Americans only sometimes did

Japan: Spends longer on the talking at the wall (about half)
US: They quickly get to physical dates which are more chaotic

Japan: bigger age range but most in their mid-late 30’s
US: half in late 20’s, half in early 30’s

The most FASCINATING person on the show for me is…

Priyanka Yoshikawa (Priya)

True or False

  • She is the founder and CEO of a skincare brand

  • She is half Japanese

  • She has worked as a translator

  • She has worked as an art therapist

  • She has a license to train elephants

  • She was miss Japan (2016)

Do you think someone proposed to her?

Do you think the couple got married?

Priya said her boyfriend wasn’t AMBITIOUS enough so they broke up.
