a) In debt and lack of young fans
b) have American owners
c) have huge amounts of debt
d) don’t need to join because of billionaire owners but didn’t want to be left out
1) Real Madrid, Barcelona,
2) Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal
3) Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan
4) Manchester City, Chelsea
Why do American owners like the super league?
Why do young Italian fans not watch football so much these days?
Why are so many teams in debt?
A Russian billionaire (Roman Abramovich) and the Abu Dhabi Royal family have bought football teams. They’ve invested millions of dollars in the teams and haven’t made a profit. Why did they spend so much money?
How did fans of the OTHER teams in the leagues react?
How did the fans of these big clubs react?
How did FIFA react?
How did the British Government react?
Day 2: 19th April 2021
Players and fans from all teams publicly oppose the super league (on social media)
Fifa members announce that players who join the new league may not be allowed to play for their national teams or in the World Cup
The UK government says it will do “whatever it takes” to stop English clubs from joining the new league. Football authorities have “a wide range of sanctions and measures”
Q: Why did so many (serious) football fans oppose having a CLOSED Super League?
Many American sports (NBA, NFL) don’t have relegation. The bottom team gets the first pick of new University stars joining the league so their team can be stronger next year.
Is this a good idea?
Are there any downside to this?
Day 3: 20th April 2021
Fans of the big 6 English teams start protests outside stadiums
Boris Johnson said to fans: “We should drop a legislative bomb to stop it – and we should do it now.”
Man City and Chelsea announce they will leave the super league
The other 4 English clubs do the same
The remaining teams announce that the Super League has been cancelled
Q: Will UEFA try to punish the teams that tried to leave?
Q: Should the teams that quit early be punished less than the teams that stayed?
