Recently there is a coconut water boom in many developed countries. Why are people going crazy for coconut water?

  • high in potassium (K)

  • no chemicals (natural)

  • low carbs

  • celebrities and instagrammers have been seen drinking it

  • it’s good for electrolytes after working out (and has less sugar than sports drinks)

  • delicious ???

A coconut usually takes 10-12 months to fully grow. They produce coconut milk

Coconut water is taken from coconuts that are 6-7 months old.

Can you name the top producing coconut countries based on their flags?

Answers: Indonesia, Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Mexico, Thailand, Tanzania

Q: How are coconuts farmed? (taken down from trees?)

One worker can usually collect 80 coconuts in a day.

One monkey can collect 1600 coconuts a day.

Recently PETA called for people to boycott coconut water from Thai companies that use monkeys to pick coconuts.

PETA has claimed that monkeys are being kept in tiny cages and are “treated like coconut picking machines

Q: Should we boycott coconut water companies that use monkey-labour?

Q: Is it better to use low-paid humans to do this dangerous job?

Leslie Sponsel, a professor at the University of Hawaii, who has studied monkeys used on coconut farms in Thailand has said:

  • "During our time in southern Thailand, we never observed or heard of cruelty or abuse of the monkeys,"

  • "Indeed, the monkeys are very similar to family pets, and for some households, even like family members to some degree.”

  • “They are fed, watered, bathed, groomed and otherwise cared for. They often ride to the coconut palm plantation on the back of a motor bike or in a cart driven by the handler.”

Q: Is using monkeys different from farms that sell chickens, raise cows or use horses to pull carts?
